“It’s the most wonderful time of the year…
Christmas movies are playing and everyone’s saying:
“Spend your money heeeeere!”
It’s the most wonderful time… It’s the most lucrative time…
It’s the most commercial tiiiiiiiiiime…
Of the yeeeeeaaaar!”

**Cue chiming bells and ringing cash registers**

Harold and Kumar 3D ChristmasIt’s that time of year again when I get to bring you a review of the very first holiday film of the season. It seems like every year the Christmas movies come out earlier and earlier – Some years are marked with newly minted holiday classics (like ELF) while others pass with barely a Grinchy snivel on the big screen (like FOUR CHRISTMASES).

I’m happy to say that those who are getting their spirit on and maybe decking their halls with other forms of herbal greenery now have a festive film to call their own. A VERY HAROLD AND KUMAR 3D CHRISTMAS is an adult Xmas extravaganza.

The film takes place six years after we last saw these two stoner buddies. The loveable Harold and Kumar (John Cho and Kal Penn) have grown apart mostly due to Kumar’s immaturity. He still lives at the old apartment, still lives to get high, and has once again lost the love of his life Vanessa. This time she dumps him for not manning up when she tells him she’s pregnant. Harold on the other hand is a Wall Street big-shot, with a beautiful home and wife, trying to start a family. Of course it’s a buddy comedy, so you know something’s gotta give to bring the guys back together – and it does.

Roldy, NPH and Kumar ready to crack some holiday nutsWhen a mysterious parcel is dropped off at Kumar’s front door addressed to Harold, he’s got to get back in touch with his old friend. One thing leads to another and soon the two are bumbling through the streets of New York, searching for the perfect Christmas tree!  A church heist, a Christmas pageant, and enough drugs to get you a lump of coal in your stocking ensue. Plus the return of NPH (Neil Patrick Harris) as himself. It’s pure, unadulterated Christmas mayhem.

Cho and Penn with SantaA VERY HAROLD AND KUMAR 3D CHRISTMAS marks a return to form, at least in my mind to the loveable buddy comedy simplicity of the WHITE CASTLE movie (and who didn’t crave those tiny little burgers for weeks afterwards!). The sequel, ESCAPE FROM GUANTANAMO BAY, was a little too offensive and unstructured for my liking.

But this third installment has the simple formula that made the first film so great – plus a whole lot of not-so-simple 3D special effects! This is one film that makes the 3D worthwhile and has a blast lampooning every piece of 3D trickery out there. If you have no interest in being wafted with smoke, powdered with cocaine or visually assaulted with male anatomy, then this isn’t the movie for you. Otherwise this is a creative and hilarious adult Christmas gem.

Directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson, Starring John Cho, Kal Penn, Neil Patrick Harris.

It’s rumored that Neil Patrick Harris was given the role of Barney Stinson on HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER because of his performance in the original Harold and Kumar.

What’s next? John Cho will reprise his role as Sulu in a Star Trek sequel, while Kal Penn is appearing in the current season of How I Met Your Mother alongside NPH.
