Captain America: The First Avenger

Captain AmericaDespite being one of the comic book characters that I knew little to nothing about, Marvel Studios manages to breathe some life into a dated superhero that I would have thought passé. But you know what they say, “All things old are new again” – Even a WWII era American-propogandist muscle man. That’s “Captain America” to you! Thanks to the charisma of actor Chris Evans, the revival actually works pretty well.

Evans plays Steve Rogers, a small, sickly man who desperately wants to fight for his country. What he lacks in size and strength, he makes up for in loyalty and determination – qualities highly sought after by a scientist played by Stanley Tucci. He is recruited to become a guinea pig for an experimental treatment that bulks him up to impressive proportions and gives him the body he (and the girls in the audience) has always dreamed of. The catch is he now has the responsibility to go along with the power.

Support the troopsOf course, they can’t just send the Cap’n out into the field fighting regular Nazi’s in his red-white-and-blue skivvies like in the wartime comics. Instead he gets to fight a super-Nazi… another human science experiment gone wrong who has a demon face and just happens to answer to the Fuhrer.

The interesting thing about the Marvel Comics movies is that they are intended as lead ups to a film that will compile all the characters. The Avengers movie will join Captain America, Hulk, Thor and Iron Man (yes, Robert Downey Jr.) together into one big ultimate comic-nerd orgy. I just hope it can live up to the massive expectations!

Support THIS troop!Captain America packs a punch, but unfortunately it’s with his weak arm. Technically the film looks great, offering lots of retro detail in the film style, costumes and sets. Digitally grafting Chris Evans’ face onto a smaller body worked surprisingly well and looked convincing. The problem for me was that the excitement wasn’t there – I felt no real interest in the story or the outcome.

Directed by Joe Johnson, Starring Chris Evans, Tommy Lee Jones, Stanley Tucci.

Stay in your seats, because there is a bonus scene after the credits and special preview for The Avengers movie.
