Last Night
Thursday, 16 June 2011 00:00

Last NightLast Night is an intimate portrait of one night in the life of a marriage and the complexity of love and betrayal. Of course those involved in this particular snapshot are among the supermodel elite, but this is a situation that can affect anyone in a romantic relationship.

We're both so beautiful, why would we cheat?Keira Knightley puts in a surprisingly strong performance as Joanna, a writer struggling with her own self-doubt in terms of career, but steadfastly secure in her relationship to hubby Michael (Sam Worthington). That is, until the night of a party when she meets Laura (Eva Mendes) face to face. Suddenly, her husbands’ “unremarkable” co-worker seems like a major threat and Joanna realizes that Michael has failed to mention that he’s been going on business trips with a total glamazon who is obviously attracted to him. Unsurprisingly, jealous rage ensues!

Choices, choices...On the flip side, with Michael out of town Joanna happens to bump into a past flame that she still has strong feelings for. No harm in meeting up for a quick catch-me-up drink… Or is there? I’m not going to give away the results of this night apart, but it’s certain to bring up some interesting conversation after viewing.

Last Night is very much a performance-based film that relies heavily on the actors to, well, act! Much of the script hinges on them filling in the blanks with body language, small gestures or expressions. Both Knightley and Worthington fill their roles admirably with strong performances.

Though it can be difficult to broach this subject matter in an impartial way, the film manages to do just that. It’s left up to the viewer to determine with whom their sympathies lie, or who might be deemed the “bad guy”, if any. Really it’s a movie about love and circumstance in the broader scope of a life together.
