The RoommateSingle white female, seeking same to share two-bedroom… Oops! Wrong movie! The Roommate might take place in a college dorm instead of an apartment building but it sure is giving me a serious case of déjà-viewed.

Start with the entire plot of Single White Female, the Jennifer Jason Leigh phenomenon of the 1990’s; move it 20 years into the future, subtract 10 years off the age of the main characters, deduct Not so creepy at and damage deposit by setting it in a dorm room and you’ll end up with The Roommate; a “thriller” that’s about as thrilling as the bland title implies.

Sara (Minka Kelly) just landed on campus for her first year of university. She’s a confident, friendly fashion-design student who seems right at home being away from home for the first time. Her roommate Rebecca (Leighton Meester) isn’t quite so laid-back. Meester and KellyThere only seems to be room for one friend in her life, and she’s decided the lucky victim is her new roomy. Soon she’s calling at all hours, borrowing personal stuff and just plain getting her creep-on. But by the time Sara realizes she’s the object of obsession, it might be too late.

This movie is mediocre at best. The characters are so one-dimensional they might as well be paper dolls and there are no real chills or thrills here at all. The scariest part was seeing Billy Zane as a fashion design professor. The Roommate is a laughable “horror” movie.

Directed by Christian E. Christiansen, Starring Leighton Meester and Minka Kelly.

Billy Zane was also involved in the fashion world in the film Zoolander.

Leighton Meester has two films currently in theatres. The Roommate and Country Strong.
