You Again

You AgainHigh School - The mere mention of those words drums up painful recollections of teenage angst; “geeks”, “jocks”, “the in-crowd”. Thankfully most of us have outgrown those labels but no matter how far you think you’ve come, a reminder always comes along that brings back memories of those awkward days and makes you cringe.

For Marni (Kristen Bell), the trigger of painful memories is the thought of her nemesis J.J., the pom-pom toting popular girl who made high school a living hell. Marni has shed the braces, bangs and pimples to become a successful and attractive young woman who finally has some confidence. When she travels home for her brothers wedding, she has no idea that Joanna, her soon-to-be sister-in-law, is actually J.J., her living nightmare!

Jamie Lee Curtis, Kristen Bell, Bety WhiteWhen Marni’s mom (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Joanna’s aunt (Sigourney Weaver) are introduced, they realize that they too have a high-school history! The two were once best friends but became jealous rivals before graduating. Now the competition is fierce.

You Again IS an awkward teenager. It has a whole lot of promise but is just clumsy and messy with bad taste in music. If you think that a stellar cast can make this movie a winner, don’t be fooled! There’s nothing wrong with the acting, but every joke resorts to embarrassingly bad slapstick humor. If I really wanted to see Jamie Lee Curtis doing a sexy dance I’d re-watch True Lies – or preferably I’d burn my eyes out with a hot poker.

Curtis and WeaverEveryone in this movie falls on their face, breaks a limb or gets covered in mud, food and so on. The biggest laughs come from Betty White, which is no surprise. If you want smart and funny social commentary go see Easy A instead.

Directed by Andy Fickman, Starring Kristen Bell, Jamie Lee Curtis, Sigourney Weaver.

Betty White has been on television or in movies since 1945. She was born in 1922.
